The Kraken 1oz Copper Challenge Coin
$20.00
Lurking in the depths of the sea, waiting for its chance to surface, using its mighty tentacles to drag ships to the icy deep ocean floor is the KRAKEN. This legendary sea monster dwelled between the coasts of Norway and Greenland where it certainly attacked its share of Viking ships. Also known as Hafgufa, meaning sea-mist, the creature was said to be more than a mile around, having many arms and often being mistaken for an island. Each of its eyes were larger than a human's head. Sudden changes in the sea such as bubbles, dangerous currents and whirlpools would alert ships of the Kraken's presence. The Kraken had been written about as early as the 13th century and many times since. In 1735, the Kraken was classified as a living organism, a cephalopod (octopus/squid), in the First Edition of the Systema Naturae by Swede Carolus Linnaeus. Again in 1752, the Kraken was extensively described in the Natural History of Norway. Perhaps this sea monster is not just maritime lore, but still lurks ... waiting.
Coin Reverse - The Anonymous Mint graciously crowns the OWL as its reverse logo. Owl represents wisdom, intelligence, mystery, transition, secrets and protection. The announcer of death. In ancient symbolism, the owl represented guardianship of the underworld and protection of the dead. Owl has been known as ruler of the night, seer of souls, and keeper of spirits that had passed from one plane to another. During medieval times, it was fabled that owls were actually priestesses or wizards in disguise.
